The 7-Day Phone Detox Challenge for Friend Groups

By the Snitch team, behavioural science experts from Imperial College London #digital-detox#friends

A day-by-day phone detox plan to drop in your group chat. Seven small steps, a nightly check-in, and a forfeit for whoever scrolls the most.

Made by the team behind Snitch. You can do this whole challenge without any app. We mention ours at the end. How we write these guides

Doing a detox alone is grim. Doing it with your mates is a laugh, and you’re far more likely to finish. Drop this in the group chat.

The rules

  • 3 to 5 people.
  • Everyone checks their screen time each night and posts the number in the chat. (Here’s where to find it.)
  • Lowest total at the end of the week picks the next group plan. Highest buys the first round.
  • One “get out of jail” pass each for a day you really need your phone.

The 7 days

Day 1: Baseline. Use your phone as normal and post your screen time tonight. No judgement.

Day 2: Notifications off. Turn off everything except calls and messages from real people.

Day 3: Home screen clear-out. Move every social app off your home screen.

Day 4: Phone-free meal. Phones in a pile at one meal. First to touch theirs washes up. (See the phone stacking game.)

Day 5: No phone in bed. Charge it outside the bedroom tonight.

Day 6: Offline plan. Do something together with phones away for 2 hours: a walk, a climb, cooking.

Day 7: Results. Post your final number and compare it with day 1. Celebrate (offline).

After the week

It’s easy to slip back once the challenge ends. To make it stick, keep the weekly check-in going or automate it. Snitch does this for you: your group shares a daily screen time pot, everyone can see how it’s going, and groups that hit their goals unlock rewards for things to do offline.
