By the Snitch team, behavioural science experts from Imperial College London #android#app-blockers

Most new friend-based screen time apps are iPhone only. Here's what works on Android, from free Digital Wellbeing to blockers, focus apps and social apps.

Made by the team behind Snitch, and Snitch is on this list. Prices checked Nov 2026. How we write these guides

Most “best screen time app” lists are written by iPhone users. Lots of the newer friend-based apps are iPhone only. So here’s a list for Android.

Start free: Digital Wellbeing

Every modern Android phone has Digital Wellbeing (in Settings). You get app timers, Focus mode and Bedtime mode for free. If you stick to limits once you’ve set them, this might be all you need. See our Digital Wellbeing guide.

The catch: timers are easy to switch off. Nobody else knows.

The apps

App Best for Price
Digital Wellbeing Free basics Free, built in
Opal Polished solo blocking Free plan (1 rule); Pro from $99.99/yr (US)
ScreenZen Free friction before opening apps Free, donation-supported
one sec A pause before apps open Free for 1 app; Pro subscription
Forest Focus sessions Free; optional Forest Plus subscription
Freedom Blocking across phone and laptop Limited free tier; Premium subscription
Snitch (ours) Friends sharing a limit Free plan; Premium from $2.99/mo (US)

Opal

One of the best-known blockers, on Android as well as iPhone and Mac. Clean design, schedules, and a Hard Mode you can’t turn off. Best for people who are good at sticking to rules once they’re set. (Opal pricing.)

ScreenZen

Free and thoughtful. It adds a short wait before distracting apps open, which is often enough to break autopilot. (screenzen.co.)

one sec

A quick breath before an app opens. Gentle, private and surprisingly effective for mindless checking. (one sec platforms.)

Forest

Grow a virtual tree while you stay off your phone. Best for study and work sessions rather than all-day limits. (forestapp.cc.)

Freedom

Blocks apps and sites across your phone and computer at once. Best if your laptop is as much of a problem as your phone. (freedom.to.)

Snitch (ours)

You and up to 4 friends share a daily screen time pot. Go over, and you eat into their time; want more, and the group decides. Most friend-approval apps are iPhone only, but Snitch works on Android and iPhone, so mixed friend groups can join. On Android it can also block sites like YouTube and Instagram in your browser, not just the apps.

Not for you if: you want your screen time kept private.
