Best Screen Time Apps for Couples (2026)
How to cut screen time together without one of you feeling policed: the chat to have first, then the options from free passcode swaps to shared-pot apps.
You’re on the sofa together. Both scrolling. One of you shows the other a reel. That counts as quality time, right?
If you both want to cut down, doing it together is much easier than going it alone. Here are the best ways to do it, starting with the free one.
First: have the chat
No app will fix this if one of you feels policed. Before you download anything:
- Make it “we”, not “you”. Try: “I’m on my phone way too much in the evenings. Want to try cutting down together?”
- Agree what you’re cutting: all apps, or just the ones that eat your evenings?
- Agree what you’ll do instead. A walk, cooking, a series you both actually watch.
- Agree on breaks. A weekend off now and then stops it feeling like a punishment.
Want it written down? Use our couples screen time agreement.
The options
| Option | How it works | Mutual? | Platforms | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swap Screen Time passcodes | Each sets the other’s passcode in iPhone Settings | Yes, if you both do it | iPhone | Free |
| LockPact | You approve each other’s unlock requests | Yes | iPhone | Free, with ads |
| Friend Controls | Your partner approves your extra time | One-way | iPhone | Free download; $29.99 lifetime (US) |
| Snitch (ours) | A shared daily time pot; going over eats into theirs | Yes | iPhone, Android | Free plan; Premium from $2.99/mo (US) |
Swapping passcodes (free)
The old-school way. Each of you sets a Screen Time limit, then the other one types in the passcode. It works, but asking means physically handing over your phone, and resetting a forgotten passcode is a faff. (How to do it well.)
Good for: trying it out before you commit to an app.
LockPact
Built for two people. You each send unlock requests, and the other approves or denies them. It’s free, which is hard to beat.
Good for: couples where you’re both on iPhone.
Friend Controls
Popular and simple, but built around one person asking and another approving. Works well if only one of you wants to cut down.
Good for: when one of you is the scroller and the other is happy to be the gatekeeper.
Snitch (ours)
You share one daily pot of screen time. If you go over, it comes out of your partner’s time. That makes it feel like a team thing rather than “you’re on your phone again”. Once a month you each get a Rot Day: 24 hours guilt-free. And groups that hit their goals unlock rewards for things to do offline, aka actual date ideas.
It also works across iPhone and Android, so mixed couples aren’t stuck.
Good for: couples who want it to feel shared, not supervised.
Heads-up: your partner will see your unlocks. If that sounds stressful, start with LockPact or swapping passcodes.
Quick picks
- Free and simple: swap passcodes, or LockPact.
- One of you is on Android: Snitch.
- Want it to feel like a team, with rewards: Snitch.
- Only one of you wants to change: Friend Controls.
One more thing
If phone use is causing real arguments, an app isn’t the whole answer. Talk it through, and if it keeps coming up, a couples counsellor can help.
