How to Limit Instagram (and Reels) on iPhone
Instagram is built to keep you there, Reels especially. How to cap it with Screen Time, what Instagram's own tools do, and why you can't block just Reels.
Instagram is designed to keep you there. Reels especially. Here’s how to take back control.
Note (On iOS 27?)
Apple renamed App Limits to Time Allowances in iOS 27, and moved the passcode under Passcode & Management. The steps below use the iOS 26 names, which you’ll still see if any of your Apple devices isn’t on iOS 27 yet.
Method 1: iPhone Screen Time limit (free)
- Settings, then Screen Time, then App Limits, then Add Limit.
- Open Social, tick Instagram, tap Next.
- Set a daily time and tap Add.
- Set a Screen Time passcode (Lock Screen Time Settings), then turn on Block at End of Limit for the Instagram limit. Give the passcode to someone else, or “Ignore Limit” is one tap away.
Method 2: Instagram’s own settings (free)
Instagram has built-in time tools. Go to your profile, tap the menu (☰), then Settings and activity, then Time management.
- Daily limit: a reminder when you hit a set time.
- Sleep mode (it used to be called Quiet mode): pauses notifications at night.
These are reminders, not blocks. On an adult account you can tap straight past them.
Can I block just Reels? No. Neither iPhone settings nor Instagram let you hide Reels or limit them on their own. Tapping Not interested on reels you don’t want only changes what you’re shown, not how much.
Method 3: Friends hold the keys (Snitch)
Add Instagram to your Snitch group’s limited apps. You and up to 4 friends share a daily screen time pot. Going over eats into their time, so “one more reel” suddenly feels less worth it.
Tips
- Log out after each session. The extra step helps.
- Move Instagram off your home screen.
- Turn off all Instagram notifications except DMs.
