X is built for “just one more refresh”. Here’s how to cap it.

Method 1: A daily limit (free)

  • iPhone: Settings, then Screen Time, then App Limits (on iOS 27, Time Allowances). Add X and set a time. Set a Screen Time passcode, then turn on Block at End of Limit.
  • Android: Settings, then Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. Tap the chart, find X and set an app timer.

Method 2: Block the website too (free)

On iPhone, add x.com and twitter.com to Safari’s Never Allow list (see how to block websites in Safari). On Android, set a Chrome site timer in Digital Wellbeing. Otherwise you’ll just open it in a browser.

Method 3: Make the app less sticky

  • Switch from the For you tab to Following. X reopens on whichever tab you used last.
  • Mute words and topics that wind you up.
  • Turn off all notifications except DMs.

Method 4: Friends hold the keys (Snitch)

If you keep blowing through limits, bring your friends in. In Snitch, your group shares a daily time pot. Doom-refreshing at midnight eats into everyone’s time, and they’ll notice.
