Phone Rules for Flatmates That Actually Stick
House rules for phones that don't feel like school: the phone basket, a Sunday offline hour, fair forfeits, and how to make it fun rather than a nag.
You all said you’d watch a film together. All four of you spent it on your phones. Flatmates are the perfect accountability group: you see each other every day, and you all want the same thing. Here’s how to set house rules that don’t feel like school.
Pick 2 or 3 rules, not 10
Choose the ones that matter to your flat:
- The phone basket. Phones go in a basket during dinner or film night.
- No phones in the living room after 10pm.
- Sunday offline hour. One hour a week, everyone together, phones away.
- Ask before you show a TikTok. Kills the endless “wait, look at this”.
Make it fair
- Agree the rules as a group, not because one person’s annoyed.
- Everyone follows them, including whoever suggested them.
- Add a light forfeit: whoever breaks it does the bins.
Make it fun
- Weekly screen time leaderboard on the fridge.
- Lowest screen time picks the takeaway.
- Plan things that need two hands: board games, cooking, a five-a-side.
Make it automatic
If rules start slipping, Snitch can do the tracking. Up to 5 flatmates share a daily screen time pot. Go over, and it eats into everyone’s time. Works on iPhone and Android, so it doesn’t matter who’s Team Apple.
When to stop
If someone isn’t up for it, don’t force them. It only works if everyone’s in.
