Snitch vs Friend Controls: Shared Pot vs One Controller

By the Snitch team, behavioural science experts from Imperial College London #friends#app-blockers

Both apps bring a friend into your screen time. Friend Controls gives one friend the keys; Snitch puts your whole group in it together. Which suits you?

Friend Controls and Snitch both believe the same thing: you’re more likely to stick to screen time limits when a friend’s involved. It’s been fun watching the idea catch on.

The big difference is who holds the power.

The quick answer

  • Pick Friend Controls if you want one friend to say yes or no when you want more time, and you’re on iPhone.
  • Pick Snitch if you want a group that’s all in it together, or if anyone in your friend group is on Android.

Where Friend Controls wins

It’s dead simple. One person asks, another answers. There’s nothing to set up as a group, and your friend doesn’t need to change their own habits.

It’s also well reviewed, with a 4.7-star rating on the US App Store.

Where Snitch wins

Nobody is the “parent”. In Friend Controls, your friend holds the keys but isn’t limited themselves. In Snitch, everyone’s in the same boat, so it feels like a team, not supervision.

Going over actually costs something. Your extra 20 minutes come out of your mates’ time, which is a much bigger nudge than a friend tapping “deny”.

It works on Android, so mixed friend groups can join.

And there’s an upside: groups that hit their goals unlock rewards for things to do offline.

The honest bit

If you just need one person to keep you honest, Friend Controls is a great, simple pick. If your group chat keeps saying “we should all go on our phones less”, Snitch was built for exactly that.
